Arc Flash Hazard Boundaries

There are four arc flash hazard boundaries. When analyzing your electrical systems, Brite Engineering will determine where the arc flash boundaries are so that your employees may work safely.
Flash Protection Boundary – this is the distance where the incident energy from the flash is 1.2 calories/cm2.
1 cal/cm2 is approximately equal to the heat from a cigarette lighter one inch below your palm.
Limited Approach Boundary – this is the distance an unqualified person must be accompanied by a qualified person.
Restricted Approach Boundary – this is the distance where only a qualified person may cross.
Prohibited Approach Boundary – this is the distance where a qualified professional must be wearing appropriate PPE (personal protection equipment) as if he/she is in direct contact with the conductor(s).
